You know, the 3 urticaria symptoms are: red lesions, swelling (angioedema) and itching. A LOT of itching, by the way.
For those who have urticaria, it is often said that itching is the main nuisance of the disease, which can even cause injuries if you scratch a lot and end up hurting yourself.
But the question that remains is: can hives exist without itching?
THE ANSWER IS NO.
Within the group of urticaria – which are classified into different types, there is no evidence of this pathology without itching. If this is happening to you, it may be another diagnosis. To make it easier, we can divide it into two groups:
1) URTICARIA DOESN’T ITCH, BUT IT HURTS
When your hives don't itch but hurt, you may actually be experiencing a condition. Urticarial vasculitis.
So, in fact, it is another pathology, a disease called vasculitis, which presents, clinically, with lesions similar to urticaria. Lesions in Urticarial Vasculitis do not disappear quickly, as happens in urticaria, and often remain for more than 24 hours, leaving small spots of a brownish color due to microbleeds.
In this type of diagnosis, lesions that look like urticaria can be very painful.
2) URTICARIA DOESN’T ITCH OR HURT
When your hives don't itch, burn or hurt, you may be facing other diagnoses that are similar to urticaria.. These other diagnoses may include auto-inflammatory diseases.
For both cases detailed above, it is necessary to consult a specialist doctor for a correct diagnosis and clinical analysis of what may be happening to you.
